Walter Matthau plays a professional hitman named Trabucco in the film. He receives a task to kill Rady to eliminate him before he testifies in court. On his way back to the hotel from the spot outside the courthouse where he planned to carry out the hit, Trabucco encounters the despondent Victor Clooney (Jack Lemmon), who is heartbroken because his wife Celia (Paula Prentiss) has left him for the odd director of a sexual clinic in California. Trabucco returns to his hotel room and sets up his rifle. However, the disturbances from Victor in the adjacent room are unsettling him. Victor attempts to hang himself in the room. Trabucco breaks the rope Victor is using to hang himself, but Victor climbs out the window to attempt suicide by jumping. To bring Victor back, Trabucco reluctantly agrees to accompany him to California to find his wife. The two arrive at the clinic, only to discover that Victor's wife has become hopelessly infatuated with the peculiar doctor Jacob Blot and is preparing to file for divorce. Victor decides to return to the hotel to continue his suicidal intentions, but Celia and the doctor secretly follow him, planning to inject Victor with a sedative, only to mistakenly inject Trabucco instead. Trabucco informs Victor of his mission to assassinate Rady, which dissuades Victor from his suicidal thoughts, and he decides to help him complete the hit.
