Theodore (Justice Smith) is a very sad young man, with confused thoughts of self-destruction lingering in his mind all day. There have been several times when Theodore tried to turn his suicidal thoughts into reality, but just at that critical moment, something always happens to prevent him from stepping into another world. Violette (Elle Fanning) is devastated and depressed after the death of her sister, with whom she was very close. While still in school, she eagerly anticipates the arrival of graduation season, as it will allow her to escape the suffocating small town of Indiana and the shadow cast by her sister's death. These two young people meet by chance at a bell tower. Theodore discovers that this lovely, genuine girl allows him to remove his mask and open his heart, while Violette feels that every moment spent with Theodore makes time more bearable.
