During the late Edo period, the Tokugawa shogunate weakened under the pressure of foreign powers and fell into decline. At this time, figures like Serizawa Kamo, Kondo Isami, Hijikata Toshizo, Sanan Kiyoteru, and Okita Soji organized the "Shinsengumi" to defend the power of the shogunate.
