During the late Edo period, the Tokugawa shogunate weakened under the pressure of foreign powers and fell into decline. At this time, figures like Serizawa Kamo, Kondo Isami, Hijikata Toshizo, Sanan Kiyoteru, and Okita Soji organized the "Shinsengumi" to defend the power of the shogunate. The ronin Yamazaki Susumu (played by Ichikawa Raizo), captivated by the personal charm of Shinsengumi commander Kondo Isami (played by Jo Kenzo), despite strong opposition from his partner, confidently volunteered to join the Shinsengumi. Soon, with his exceptional swordsmanship, Yamazaki quickly gained the trust of Kondo and Hijikata. However, former commander Serizawa Kamo was executed during an internal revolution in the Shinsengumi, which caused Yamazaki to become wary of the group. During the Ikedaya Incident, Yamazaki had to draw his sword to confront anti-shogunate forces in order to protect his comrades. After the incident, he abandoned his previous partner and left with the Shinsengumi.
