Alice (Bonnie Hunt) and George (Charles Grodin) live in a large house in the suburbs with their three children, Ryce (Nicholle Tom), Ted (Christopher Castile), and Emily (Sarah Rose Karr). Their lives are peaceful and happy until one day, a sad and lovable stray dog appears at the Newtons' doorstep. After much pleading from the three kids, the puppy becomes a new member of the Newton family, named Beethoven. As time passes, not only do the Newton kids grow up, but so does Beethoven. In just a few months, the originally small and cute Beethoven has grown into a gigantic creature. While constantly causing trouble, Beethoven also brings immense joy to the Newton family. Beethoven's presence catches the attention of veterinarian Varnick (Dean Jones), and the evil doctor begins scheming to claim Beethoven for himself.
