In 1989, it was the Showa 64 year in Japan, but this year did not last long. With the emperor's passing, the brief Showa 64 year came to an end. During these limited seven days, a little girl was kidnapped in a certain place. The kidnappers demanded a huge ransom of 20 million yen and cleverly negotiated with the victim's family and law enforcement. Although the victim's father (Masatoshi Nagase) paid the ransom as agreed, the kidnappers brutally killed the girl. At this critical moment of transition between the old and new eras in Japan, the case, codenamed “64,” did not attract much attention, and even more than a decade later, this unresolved case remains a haunting memory for many involved investigators. Yoshinobu Mikami (Koichi Sato), who was an investigator at that time, is now serving as a public relations officer at the Gunma Prefectural Police, constantly navigating between superiors and the media. As the statute of limitations for “64” approaches, people seem to remember this enigmatic case once again... This film is based on the mystery novel of the same name by Hideo Yokoyama.
