Chinese youth Cheng Huan (played by Richard Barthelmess) travels to London, hoping to teach Buddhism in a foreign land. However, the gap between idealism and reality is cruel; Cheng Huan, who is depressed and unsuccessful, not only neglects his career but also becomes addicted to opium, living in a state of despair every day. One day, by chance, Cheng Huan encounters a beautiful girl named Ruth (played by Lillian Gish). Ruth has a tragically miserable background; her father, Bartin (played by Donald Crisp), is a fiercely brutal drunkard who often beats Ruth when he is heavily intoxicated. Their similarly tragic experiences draw their lonely hearts closer together, and eventually, unable to endure her father's abuse any longer, Ruth runs away from home, and Cheng Huan takes her in. However, the good times are short-lived, as Bartin soon finds Ruth's whereabouts and forcibly brings her back home, subjecting her to another round of torment like a raging storm.
