Aaron (played by Hou Hsiao-hsien), the owner of a fabric shop and a former star of a youth baseball team, is childhood friends with Ah-Zhen (played by Tsai Chin). Ah-Zhen is a senior assistant at a company, always dreaming of marrying soon and immigrating to the United States to change her current living situation, longing for a better future. Aaron enjoys helping others, including his friend Ah-Qin (played by Wu Nien-jen), who drives a taxi. He has a strong sense of nostalgia and often visits the baseball field to watch games. Facing the rapidly changing society around them, Aaron and Ah-Zhen are involved with different circles of people, and they inevitably drift apart, leading to cracks in their relationship. Later, Aaron is stabbed by a young man who has feelings for Ah-Zhen and sits alone by the roadside waiting. As he gradually slips into unconsciousness, he seems to rediscover memories of participating in youth baseball competitions.
