Graham (James Spader) has a unique obsession: he records various women candidly discussing their sexual experiences and details in front of his camera. When Graham returns to his hometown after many years, he has nothing but a car and these videotapes. Thus, he stays temporarily at the home of his classmate John. John (Peter Gallagher) is a successful man who has been having an affair with his wife Ann's (Andie MacDowell) sister, Cynthia, while being indifferent to his wife. While Ann accompanies Graham to look for a place to rent, they engage in a lengthy conversation about sex in a restaurant, during which Ann admits that she doesn't care much about her sex life, and Graham reveals his secret: he is impotent. Ann accidentally discovers the videotapes of Graham's recordings with various women and, feeling frustrated by her husband's indifference, decides to make a tape of her own.
