James Franco has been planning to bring the making of the cult film The Room to the big screen since last year. Recently, the film has been officially titled The Disaster Artist, and New Line Cinema, known for producing horror films, has come on board as the distributor. The Room, released in 2003, is a cult film written, directed, and starring Tommy Wiseau, often cited as one of the worst movies ever made. However, the film has gained a unique style and reputation, even being referred to as the "Citizen Kane of bad movies." The storyline revolves around the love triangle between the protagonist played by Tommy Wiseau, his fiancée, and his best friend. The actors' poor performances, the bizarre plot twists, and the lack of any aesthetic in the cinematography all leave a lasting impression. In 2013, one of the actors from The Room, Greg Sestero, and Tom Bissell co-published The Disaster Artist, reflecting on the making of the film. Sestero noted in the book that Tommy Wiseau had no prior filmmaking experience when he started shooting the film. Franco will not only direct the film but also portray Tommy Wiseau, while his brother, Dave Franco, will play Greg Sestero. Franco's close friend Seth Rogen will serve as a producer and is also negotiating to appear in the film. Other producers include Evan Goldberg, Vince Jolivette, and Franco himself. The screenplay has been written by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, known for their work on the romantic films The Fault in Our Stars and 500 Days of Summer. The film is scheduled to start shooting on December 7 of this year.
