Japanese novelist Nagai Kafū (played by Masahiko Tsugawa) comes from a prestigious family but leads a life of indulgence, ultimately being expelled from his home by his brother. After returning from Europe, he remains unchanged in his hedonistic ways, spending his days mingling with various women and indulging in depicting the lives of lower-class geishas, which earns him disdain from his peers. One day, 57-year-old Nagai feels a dual lack of creativity and physical desire, and thus goes out to Yamaichi, where he encounters Yukiko (played by Yuki Sumida), a private prostitute who has ended up here due to the Hanshin Earthquake. Nagai regains his confidence through Yukiko and is attracted to her simple character, while Yukiko is determined to dedicate herself to Nagai. The two promise to marry, but Nagai fails to show up on the day of their wedding. They become separated and never meet again until death...
