The story takes place in Los Angeles in the 1960s. Tom (Robert Duvall) is a detective who goes to visit his brother Des (Robert De Niro), who is a priest. To Tom's surprise, his brother is intricately connected to a cold case from twenty years ago. The victim was a woman, and she seemed to have a very ambiguous relationship with Des. Tom investigates the case to prove his brother's innocence and soon uncovers a man named Jack (Charles Durning). Jack is now a construction contractor, but twenty years ago, he was a mob leader. Tom's actions attract Jack's attention, and Jack certainly won’t let this go unchallenged.
