The story takes place in the early Showa period in a remote and tranquil small town, where a girl named Fujiko (played by Rina Kohinata) lives. Fujiko is a bus ticket collector who boards the same bus every day and follows the same route. The monotonous routine of her life fills Fujiko with deep anguish, and she is utterly weary of her life and work. One day, Fujiko's colleague, Yoko, dies in an accident; however, rumors suggest that Yoko's death was not an accident. Her fiancé, Niitaka (played by Tadanobu Asano), has a mysterious past and is likely a serial killer. These unusual events leave Fujiko feeling anxious. Soon after, a driver named Niitaka joins the bus company where Fujiko works. Remembering the earlier rumors, Fujiko is filled with both fear and curiosity about Niitaka.
