The story takes place during World War II, where Zhou Zuo (played by Nagamoto Hiroyuki) is gravely ill and has lost hope in life. He arrives at a hot spring inn in Okayama Prefecture, planning to end his life there. At the inn, he meets a 17-year-old girl named Niiko (played by Okada Mariko), and under her careful care, Zhou Zuo gradually recovers his health and rekindles his hope for life. When Zhou Zuo sees Niiko again three years later, he does not cherish his hard-won health but instead squanders it on alcohol and revelry. Zhou Zuo plans to invite Niiko to share in his demise, but Niiko's cheerful personality ultimately dissuades them from this thought. As time passes, the complicated feelings between Niiko and Zhou Zuo continue to intertwine, and Niiko remains unmarried, waiting for Zhou Zuo's unexpected return.
