Mary (Elle Fanning) is an unconventional girl who has been fascinated by supernatural myths since childhood. She inherits her parents' progressive ideas, and her personality is independent, strong-willed, and rebellious. In order to provide his daughter with a better education, Mary's father sends her to the home of his friend William (Derek Riddell), where Mary meets the melancholic young poet Shelley (Douglas Booth). Mary quickly becomes infatuated with Shelley, and when she decides to elope with him to London, she discovers that Shelley already has a family. However, Mary does not care about this; she resolutely chooses to be with Shelley. Due to betraying his family, Shelley loses financial support from his father, and poverty does not break their bond; it is Shelley's infidelity that ultimately tears them apart.
