The sorrowful brothers, Edward and Alphonse, attempt to use the greatest taboo in alchemy—human transmutation—to bring their deceased mother back to life, but they encounter immense disaster. Alphonse loses his body, and his soul is bound to a suit of armor; Edward sacrifices his right arm and left leg to prevent his brother from crossing into the realm of the dead.
