The story takes place in a small town in Kansas, where a lawyer named Charlie (John Cusack) who usually represents gangsters finds himself with a stroke of incredible luck on Christmas Eve. He and his law firm partner Vic (Billy Bob Thornton) manage to get their hands on a whopping two million dollars from the local mob boss Bill (Randy Quaid)! They plan to skip town with the money on Christmas Day, and Charlie hopes to take his love interest Renata (Connie Nielsen) with him. However, their dream comes crashing down when a snowstorm hits on Christmas Day. Due to the storm, local transportation is completely paralyzed, and everyone is trapped in the small town.
