In the cold northern city of Abashiri, a place rarely visited by people, many prisoners serve their sentences. Young gang member Shinichi Tachibana (played by Ken Takakura) is sent here for injuring the leader of a rival gang. Growing up in the southern country, Shinichi struggles to adapt to Abashiri's harsh winter. Additionally, the robber Kondo Gonza (played by Hiroshi Nanbara) and self-proclaimed leader Yoda (played by Toru Abe), who share a cell with him, constantly trouble him. Shinichi endures it, hoping to be released soon to return to his mother (played by Akiko Kazami). He was born into a broken family and escaped due to his rebellion against his stepfather Kunizo (played by Akira Sawada). From a letter from his sister, he learns that his mother is seriously ill and doesn't have long to live. As Shinichi's hopes for parole dwindle, Kondo and Yoda plan an escape, prompting him to decide to take risks with these desperate men...This film is adapted from Kazuki Ito's original work "The Face of a Convict."
