The director of the mental hospital, Dr. Murcison, is about to retire, and the capable young Dr. Edward (played by Gregory Peck) is set to take over. The young and beautiful female doctor, Peterson (played by Ingrid Bergman), falls in love with him, only to discover that the person before her is not the real Dr. Edward, but rather his secretary, who has come to point out that this imposter is the murderer of Dr. Edward. Faced with her lover's ambiguous identity, Peterson refuses to believe he is a killer. However, Director Murcison uses psychoanalysis to validate the "fact." Complicating matters, this fake Dr. Edward also believes he is guilty and doesn’t even know who he is or what he has experienced. Peterson is very insistent on her judgment and decides to help him uncover the truth of the events. Under police pursuit, she helps him escape to the home of a psychology professor, where a series of fascinating psychoanalytical processes unfold, revealing shadows from his childhood and the truth behind Dr. Edward's murder.
