The story takes place in a remote small town, where the mysterious disappearance of Tom (played by Robert Milli) puzzles officer John (played by Donald Sutherland). With a strong sense of responsibility and justice, he decides to track the case. Tom had close ties to a call girl named Daniels (played by Jane Fonda) before his disappearance. Following a love letter between the two, John travels to New York. During his surveillance of Daniels, John discovers many suspicious aspects about this mysterious woman, who also seems to be tracking someone. Soon after, the appearance of another victim begins to make the case turn sinister, and as the investigation deepens, a man named Cobble (played by Charles Cioffi) surfaces. Is he the person John has been desperately searching for?
