To celebrate Thanksgiving with his family, advertising executive Neil (Steve Martin) boards a flight to Chicago. At the airport, he encounters a loudmouthed man named Del (John Candy), whom he finds unbearable. Unfortunately, they end up sitting next to each other on the plane. Just when Neil thinks he's survived the two-and-a-half-hour journey, a snowstorm forces the flight to change course. In a series of misadventures, Neil and Del end up sharing a hotel room. Things go from bad to worse when a thief robs them of all their belongings, leaving the two no choice but to take a train home. As time passes, Neil realizes that Del's personality is not as intolerable as it seems at first, and their relationship begins to grow closer. However, things aren't over yet; through one mishap after another, Neil feels increasingly distant from home.
