Lelouch was originally a prince of the Empire, and after his mother was assassinated, he, along with his blind sister, was exiled to Area 11 (formerly Japan) as hostages. There, they met the Japanese prince Suzaku, and the three of them spent a wonderful childhood together. Eventually, the Empire fully invaded Area 11, and Lelouch and his sister's peaceful life was once again taken from them, causing them to become separated from Suzaku.
