Truck driver Jacques (played by Jean Gabin) was born into a family with a history of alcoholism and has always felt very inferior, believing that he inherited the family's poor genes. One day, a murder occurs on a train, and Jacques is the only eyewitness. He sees his colleague's wife, Savitri (played by Simone Simon), at the scene, but out of selfishness, Jacques does not report it to the police.
This incident brings Jacques and Savitri's family closer together, and as they become more involved, Jacques gradually falls in love with Savitri. In order to be with the woman he loves, Jacques encourages Savitri to kill her husband, but at the last moment, Savitri hesitates. Savitri's husband, despite being shocked by his wife's actions, still cannot escape his feelings for her.
