Paul (played by Paul Giamatti), a teacher at the preparatory school Barton Academy, is not very popular; neither the students, teachers, nor the principal like him, as they find him flashy and rigid. During the Christmas holiday in 1970, Paul stays at the school to supervise students who cannot go home. A few days later, only one student remains—15-year-old troublemaker Angus, a good student whose bad behavior often puts him on the verge of expulsion. Also staying with Paul and Angus is Mary, the school’s head chef, an African American woman who serves the privileged sons and whose own son has recently gone missing in Vietnam. These three distinctly different misfits form a strange Christmas family, sharing their unfortunate experiences over two weeks in the snowy New England winter, realizing that none of them are grateful for their past.
