The Takahashi family of three lives in a shabby little house. The husband, Riiichi (played by Akira Nishimura), works at the Tohoku University library and has maintained a five-year affair with a female clerk, Yoshiko; the Takahashi family faces numerous life crises and is filled with despair. One day, while Riiichi is on a business trip, the robber Hiraoka (played by Shigeru Fukou) sneaks into their home at night, assaults and rapes Riiichi's wife, Sadako. The next morning, feeling deeply humiliated, Sadako contemplates suicide but ultimately cannot bear to give up her love for her children. A few days later, Hiraoka returns, and Sadako suddenly discovers she is pregnant. To rid herself of Hiraoka's entanglement, she decides to kill the man who has wronged her… This film won fourth place in the top ten Japanese films of the year and ranked seventh in the "Film Times" list of one hundred works.
