The cold and brutal drifter Johnny (played by David Thewlis) comes to London in search of his ex-girlfriend Louise Clancy (played by Lesley Sharp), moving from the industrial city of Manchester, plagued by unemployment, to the metropolis of London, intertwined with both glamour and darkness. Johnny meets Louise's roommate Sophie (played by Katrin Cartlidge), and they have sex in the apartment that same day. Upon waking up, Sophie, who has already fallen in love with Johnny, receives nothing but a cynical rejection from him. The misanthropic Johnny not only harbors hatred for women but also despises everything about himself and the world around him. He coldly has sex with strangers, and violently turns against this world in despair. The film won the Best Director award at the 46th Cannes Film Festival in 1993, with lead actor David Thewlis receiving the Best Actor award for this role; it was also nominated for the Palme d'Or at the same festival.
