High school girl An Ran (played by Zou Yitian) is smart and cheerful; she understands profound emotions but is not very clear about the trivial rules related to interests in life. She firmly believes that "justice and honesty" are the principles of being a person. In her Chinese class with the homeroom teacher Wei Wan, she publicly pointed out the latter's teaching errors, but her classmates did not support her. Mi Xiaoling and Liu Donghu are classmates who are closer to An Ran. They also have their own disappointments. Mi Xiaoling, who calls An Ran "sister," has to give up her studies to become a sales clerk due to family reasons. Liu Donghu, who lives in the same building, faces family disintegration due to his parents' emotional discord... The class monitor, Zhu Wenjuan, is cautious and self-preserving but is popular among the class. An Ran's mother gave up her profession for the family, and her years of rigid life have left her with many complaints. She urges An Ran to strive for the three-good student quota for her first year, as it concerns her daughter's future... Her father (played by Zhu Xu) is open-minded but feels unsuccessful because he doesn't want to cater to external demands with his artwork. An Ran's older sister, An Jing (played by Luo Yan), who loves her the most, uses her position to publish Teacher Wei's clumsy poetry in exchange for An Ran being nominated as a three-good student... In the mid-1980s, an ordinary family serves as a microcosm of the era, revealing the marks of human nature after experiencing a special period. This film won the Best Feature Film Award at the 5th China Golden Rooster Awards and the 8th Hundred Flowers Awards, adapted from Tie Ning's novel "The Red Shirt Without Buttons."
