Senior police officer Gorō Yabuchi (played by Koji Yakusho) mishandles a kidnapping case, resulting in both the kidnapper and a politician who was held hostage being shot dead. Subsequently, he is ordered by his superiors to take a break. The kidnapper left behind a mysterious phrase, "Restore the World Order," which piques Yabuchi's curiosity, leading him to take a vacation in the forest where the kidnapper had previously roamed. The mountain was once filled with dense beech trees, but with the arrival of an unnamed tree, the surrounding flowers and plants have rapidly died at an unbelievable speed. This tree can secrete poison from its roots, and no other plants can escape its grip. In the forest, Yabuchi meets Naoto Kōyama (played by Hiroyuki Ikeuchi), a young man who worships the tree. Kōyama firmly believes in the theory that "only the strong survive" and does not hesitate to confront the forest guardian, Nakazone (played by Ren Osugi), who insists on cutting down the divine tree. On the other hand, botany expert Mitsuko Jinbo (played by Jun Fubuki) and her sister Chizuru (played by Yoriko Dōguchi) have differing opinions on how to handle the divine tree. What started as mere curiosity for Yabuchi gradually pulls him into this bizarre incident... This film won the Best Film Award at the 2000 Japan Film Professional Awards.
