A noteworthy work that critically examines the depth of human suffering hidden between men and women through the dark, bittersweet tragedy that befalls Oshin in the light of snow. Set in the snowy region of Hokuriku Echigo, this masterpiece of water surface literature depicts the love and sorrow of the married woman Oshin, brought to life by actress Ryouko Sakuma and master director Masaru Imai. The toji of Fushimi Daiwakan Sake Brewery was a distant Echigo toji. In the year Showa 12, when the Sino-Japanese War began, two men, Rukichi Segami and Gonsuke Sabu, came to work during the farming off-season. Rukichi was a quiet, serious worker, and as the new year began, he was to be promoted to the leader of the toji. Gonsuke, who had a beautifully reputed wife, grew envious of Rukichi, who was advancing in his career. Gonsuke returned to his hometown before Rukichi and learned from Rukichi's brother, Isuke, about Rukichi's affairs during the Siberian period. On his way home, Gonsuke became infatuated with Rukichi's wife Oshin, and raped her at the crematorium. From that moment on, Oshin endured suffering that she could not reveal to her husband, Rukichi, or her mother-in-law. Meanwhile, Gonsuke was recognized as the hardest worker at Daiwakan throughout the year, but he began to drink heavily after hearing callous lies that Oshin had an affair with the buyer Sato. In Echigo, Oshin found herself pregnant with Gonsuke's child. Fearing the eyes of others, Oshin devoted her days and nights to trying to rid herself of the child, but ultimately, the day came when she awaited her husband Rukichi as she was. Rukichi returned to Shin'ichi in March and questioned Oshin about Sato, but he felt ashamed of his foolish doubts when he looked into Oshin's clear eyes. The couple's relationship was envied by others. One day, when Rukichi learned of Oshin's pregnancy, he was overjoyed, but when the midwife informed him that she had been pregnant since December, he recalled that he had been in Fushimi in December when Gonsuke had returned home. Rukichi was filled with intense rage. Finally, he confronted Oshin in the rice fields and pushed her down into the mud. In a nearby charcoal hut, Rukichi ever so tenderly gazed upon Oshin's beautiful, pale corpse. Eventually, as ants began to devour Oshin's body, Rukichi placed her corpse in the fire pit and descended the mountain. Just as he saw Gonsuke being sent off as a soldier, Rukichi embraced Gonsuke and threw himself into the valley.
