Comic shop worker Clarence Worley (Christian Slater) meets the beautiful Alabama Whitman (Patricia Arquette) at the cinema on his birthday, and the two share a night of passion. The next day, Alabama tells Clarence she is a prostitute, a birthday gift from Clarence's boss, but she has fallen in love with him. Clarence decides to rescue Alabama from her pimp Drexl Spivey (Gary Oldman). After a violent clash at a nightclub, Clarence shoots and kills Drexl, taking a briefcase he thinks belongs to Alabama. Later, they discover the briefcase contains a large amount of cocaine. Overjoyed, they begin to wander, looking for opportunities to turn the cocaine into cash. They make their way to Los Angeles, where they find Clarence's old friend Dick Ritchie (Michael Rapaport). Dick is an actor trying to make it in Hollywood, and he introduces them to a director named Lee who can help sell the cocaine. Meanwhile, the gangster Vincenzo Coccotti (Christopher Walken), whose cocaine was stolen by Drexl, begins searching for the couple. A series of battles are about to unfold—will the romance between this couple survive?
