Joe (Laurence Harvey) comes from a humble background, which makes him feel very inferior. However, this Joe falls in love with Susan (Heather Sears), the daughter of a wealthy businessman, and the significant disparity in their social status means their relationship is destined to face challenges. To prevent this relationship, Susan's father arranges a marriage for her with someone of equal status, which leaves Joe feeling deeply humiliated. A beautiful actress, Alice (Simone Signoret), appears in Joe's life, and their relationship gradually becomes intimate, but this still cannot fill the emptiness in Joe's heart. Joe knows the importance of identity and status, so he returns to Susan, hoping to gain entry into high society. Ultimately, Susan's father can no longer resist his daughter's determination and agrees to the marriage. Abandoned, Alice loses all hope and tragically dies in an accident.
