In a remote and isolated mountain village in Japan, the wealthy heir Daisaku (played by Yoshio Harada) steals all the clocks from the villagers and buries them underground. From then on, the village loses the concept of time and remains stagnant. Many years later, Daisaku's cousin Shige (played by Tatsuya Nakadai) marries his cousin Keiko (played by Keiko Shin高). However, Keiko's father had put a chastity belt on her years ago to prevent any illicit affairs. Years into their marriage, Shige and Keiko are troubled by their sexual issues, and Shige is ridiculed by the villagers for being childless. One day, in a fit of anger, Shige cannot take it anymore and stabs Daisaku, who had been mocking him. Afterward, the couple chooses to flee but eventually returns to the village. From then on, Shige frequently sees Daisaku's ghost and gradually begins to forget the names of things around him, losing his sanity. In this seemingly isolated village, bizarre events continue to unfold without cessation... This film is the posthumous work of the avant-garde director Shuji Terayama.
