Charlie (Lee Marvin) and Lee (Clu Gulager) are professional hitmen who work for money. After eliminating their target, Johnny (John Cassavetes), they begin to doubt the simplicity of the job. Driven by curiosity, Charlie and Lee investigate Johnny’s background and discover he was a moderately famous race car driver whose career ended due to an accident on the track. As their investigation deepens, a woman named Sheila (Angie Dickinson) emerges; she is the mistress of mob boss Browning (Ronald Reagan) and has intricate ties to the murdered Johnny. Gradually, Charlie and Lee find themselves caught in a deep vortex they cannot escape.
