The samurai Kwan-San enjoys the reputation of "Saint of Spears" in the domain and is favored by many women due to his handsome appearance. His rival, Samurai Ban no Jo, always seeks to compete with Kwan-San; however, in a time of peace, the samurai only wish for the smooth birth of the lord's heir to maintain their samurai status and get by. Kwan-San and Ban no Jo, both top-tier fighters, find themselves without a chance to showcase their skills, so they engage in competition over the "true platform" qualification in the tea ceremony during a celebration for the lord. The tea ceremony master, Ai (played by Shima Iwashita), favors Kwan-San and reveals the secret of the true platform to him at midnight. Unexpectedly, Ban no Jo seizes their sashes as evidence of infidelity. Although Kwan-San and Ai have no actual relationship, they flee in the night at Ai's repeated insistence. Along the way, Kwan-San struggles to fully accept Ai's affection while being pursued closely by a murderous team consisting of his master Ichijō and Ai’s younger brother Jinpei. Where will this pair of desperate lovers go? This film won the Silver Bear for Best Director at the 1986 Berlin Film Festival.
