During the Japanese colonial period in Korea, the grandson of a Japanese general, Hasegawa Tatsuhiro (played by Jô Odagiri), competes in long-distance running with a poor youth, Kim Jun-shik (played by Dong-gun Jang), up to the Olympic trials. Although Jun-shik risks everything to win, he is falsely accused of cheating. The outraged public clashes with the military, and ultimately, Jun-shik is conscripted. He and his brothers endure humiliation at the hands of the Japanese army. In a battle, Jun-shik unexpectedly captures a sniper named Sly (played by Fan Bingbing), who specializes in killing Japanese soldiers. General Tatsuhiro arrives at the front lines to oversee the battle, further humiliating Jun-shik. He insists on long-distance running every night but has his running shoes burned. Unwilling to be part of a suicide squad, he decides to escape with his comrades. Seeing the Soviet army approaching, he resolves to run back to deliver a message. As a result, the Japanese troops suffer a devastating defeat, and Tatsuhiro and Jun-shik are captured. In the freezing cold, Jun-shik encounters his brother Jong-tae, who has turned cold-blooded after their escape. After a riot, Jun-shik and Tatsuhiro engage in a duel, during which Jun-shik shows mercy to his opponent. Subsequently, the Germans launch a furious counteroffensive, and Jun-shik and Tatsuhiro face life and death together in the suicide squad. To survive, they endure hardships and cross mountains, eventually reaching the German-occupied territory. The two become separated, and their next meeting occurs in a German camp in Normandy, where Tatsuhiro once again sees the figure of Jun-shik running...
