In 1938, after the Japanese invaded the capital of the Republic of China, Nanjing, they planned to encircle the vital junction of the Jinpu Railway and the Longhai Railway in Xuzhou from both the north and south, in order to achieve complete occupation of East China. Li Zongren (played by Tai Honglai), the Commander of the Fifth War Zone of the Nationalist Party, was appointed in a critical moment to command the defense of Xuzhou and resist the Japanese invaders. The Japanese army invaded Shandong, and General Han Fuju fled the battle in fear, surrendering Jinan to the Japanese army; Chiang Kai-shek (played by Zhao Hengduo) enforced military discipline by executing Han. To enhance combat strength, Li Zongren incorporated the marginalized Sichuan troops under his command and strongly urged Chiang Kai-shek to restore the command of Zhang Zizhong, forming a strong anti-Japanese united front. Meanwhile, the Japanese Tsukiyama Division moved south to Linyi, massacring local civilians.
