This is Stanley Kubrick's first narrative feature. The screenplay was written by his high school classmate, poet Howard Sackler, and the filming budget was raised by Kubrick himself, mostly by borrowing from his father, uncle, and friends. This work, like Kubrick's later films, is filled with surrealistic symbolism, so only one art film distributor was willing to release and screen it. Kubrick considered the film merely a practice work and only agreed to private screenings, often contemplating destroying the prints. Nevertheless, the film received some positive reviews from critics, especially regarding its cinematography.
