Owen Thruston is a general from the Civil War, demoted to commander at Fort Apache. In an effort to restore his former glory, he places burdens on each cavalryman, causing resentment among the soldiers. However, his daughter Fera quickly gains the friendship of the soldiers' wives. Fera falls in love with Lieutenant O'Rourke, but Owen opposes it due to their differing social standings. Later, a massacre of patrol cavalry by Indians occurs on the border. Owen sends Captain York to Mexico to invite the Indians back to the reservation, which York accomplishes successfully. Owen, however, employs cunning to deceive Cochise, aiming to drive the Indians back to the reservation. During negotiations, the tribal chiefs demand the expulsion of the disgraceful Mi-Chang from the reservation, while Owen insists on unconditional return to the reservation. The negotiations break down, and Owen orders an attack, with York opposing and being reassigned to the supply team. Following a disastrous battle, Owen and the troops face death together, preserving the honor of the cavalry unit.
