The French foreign correspondent Alfred Ney has been living with his daughter Jeanne on Crimea for six years. It is the final phase of the Russian Civil War. He is so tired of the country that he wants to return to Paris with Jeanne. He receives a list of Bolshevik agents from the White Guard spy Chalybieff, which he buys from him. The Bolsheviks learn of this, and two of them want to take the list back from Ney. A shootout ensues, and Alfred Ney is shot. The arriving Jeanne Ney is shocked, as one of the Bolsheviks is Andrej, whom she has fallen in love with. Andrej's friend Zacharkiewicz helps her escape on a ship to Paris after the Red Army enters the town. She finds a job as a clerk at her uncle Raymond Ney's detective agency, but only after Raymond Ney's blind daughter Gabriele firmly requested it. Shortly after, Chalybieff appears at the detective agency. When he sees that Gabriele's father is not impoverished, he approaches the blind woman and eventually even proposes to her. Meanwhile, Andrej has also arrived in Paris, where he is supposed to financially support the sailors in Toulon in revolutionary actions. He contacts Jeanne. At Gabriele's engagement party, Chalybieff attempts to kiss Jeanne while Gabriele, unaware, caresses his hand. Later in a bar, he drunkenly reveals his plan to the barmaid Margot to eliminate Gabriele after the wedding; he wants to flee with Margot and the money. Margot informs Jeanne, and Raymond Ney throws the fortune seeker out. The detective Gaston has been commissioned to investigate the whereabouts of a diamond that was kept by a wealthy American at a jeweler's and went missing; a reward of $50,000 has been offered for its recovery. He discovers that the jeweler's parrot has eaten the diamond and deals swiftly with the bird, shocking the jeweler's wife. Raymond Ney arranges to hand over the diamond over the phone for that evening and eagerly counts the imaginary money in anticipation. When he opens the door to the supposed deliverer of the money, he is immediately strangled by two hands. It was Chalybieff, who steals the diamond and leaves a jacket with a picture and a letter from Andrej at the crime scene to cast suspicion on him. With a prostitute he picked up on the street, Chalybieff goes to a short-stay hotel and encounters Jeanne and Andrej, who have spent a night together there. The plan succeeds; Andrej is arrested the next day with a lot of money in his pocket on the train. Jeanne goes to Chalybieff and urges him to confirm Andrej’s alibi. During their discussion, the diamond falls out of his pocket, and Jeanne sees her uncle's murderer in front of her. After a brief chase, he is arrested, and Andrej is released. Jeanne and Andrej finally kneel together before the altar of a church.
