Based on the novel of the same name by Emma Donoghue, the story takes place in the summer of 1859, where British nurse Libby (played by Florence Pugh) arrives in a small village in Ireland to care for a miraculous girl, Anna O'Donnell, who has reportedly survived for over four months without eating. This has astonished people, who believe Anna is a rare phenomenon. Tourists flock to see the miraculous girl, thinking that merely seeing her or receiving her blessing can grant them some form of miraculous protection. Reporter Byrne from The Irish Times comes to cover this nationwide sensation and, during an interview, becomes acquainted with Libby. The two gradually uncover the truth behind Anna's fasting and embark on a daring rescue mission for her.
