Holly (Hilary Swank) and Gerry (Gerard Butler) deeply love each other. Although they sometimes have arguments, these are just part of their life together. Holly feels she has found her true love, but Gerry is diagnosed with brain cancer and passes away after their marriage. Since then, Holly has been living in the pain of losing her beloved. She feels that her husband has not truly left her; she can still feel Gerry's presence in their home. She isolates herself at home, and her two friends, Denise (Lisa Kudrow), Sarah, and her mother along with the bartender Daniel at her mother's bar are all very worried about her. On her 30th birthday, she starts receiving letters from Gerry, each ending with the note "I love you." Gerry's letters give Holly the strength to move forward step by step, though in reality, Gerry is dead, and she ultimately has to live on her own. Denise is pregnant, and Sarah is about to get married; both are living happily, leaving Holly feeling lonely. She starts to avoid everyone, and Daniel has been by her side since they met, expressing his love for her. Holly cries in her mother's arms for the first time and discovers that her mother has been sending Gerry's letters all along. As she is about to open the last letter, will Holly find renewal?
