Wan'er (played by Min Chunxiao) comes from a once-prominent scholarly family that has fallen on hard times. At her parents' insistence, she marries into the Hou family, with her husband being the second young master, Rongzhi. Rongzhi is a reckless rich young man, only interested in indulging in pleasure. On their wedding night, he abandons Wan'er and runs away to live with the socialite Lulu, only returning home occasionally to ask for money. In contrast, the third young master, Xuanzi (played by Zhou Shuai), is loyal and kind-hearted, a positive and sunny young man. Both he and Wan'er share a love for literature, which deepens their relationship as brother-in-law and sister-in-law. Wan'er gradually becomes enamored with Xuanzi's literary talent and character, writing letters to him under the name of a reader, thus becoming pen pals. Xuanzi also develops feelings for this pen pal, unaware of his sister-in-law's secret affection for him. The Lugou Bridge Incident breaks out, and the passionate Xuanzi abandons his pen to join the army. Just as this love starts to become clearer, it is interrupted by the ravages of war. Soon, devastating news arrives: Xuanzi has been captured... What will become of their already fragile love in this perilous city?
