Director Jean (played by Jean Yanne) and his girlfriend Catherine (played by Marlène Jobert) temporarily reside in Carmague, occasionally trying to find work and sometimes going out to shoot footage. The temperamental Jean belittles Catherine, but during the days when Catherine leaves him to rest at her grandmother's, Jean finds it unbearable and visits her uninvited. When Catherine really returns, Jean responds by delivering a slap... Their relationship is maintained through a cycle of breakups and reconciliations. Meanwhile, Jean still has contact with his estranged wife. Catherine, feeling weary of everything, proposes breaking up again. After wandering around the small town together, they part ways. Jean, having lost contact with Catherine, soon learns that she is engaged to a middle-class man. This breakup seems irreparable. The film won the Best Actor award at the 1972 Cannes Film Festival.
