Laura (played by Penélope Cruz) returns to her long-lost homeland for her sister's wedding, bringing along her lovely children. However, in the joyful atmosphere of the wedding celebration, Laura's daughter, Irene (played by Carla Campra), goes missing. Shortly after, Irene receives a call from the kidnappers, who demand Laura to extract a ransom of 300,000 euros to spare her daughter's life. Until this moment, Laura barely revealed her family's true financial situation; although to others she appeared to be a wealthy lady, her husband, Alejandro (played by Ricardo Darín), had long declared bankruptcy. Back in her hometown, Laura reunites with her former lover, Paco (played by Javier Bardem), who even decides to sell his precious land to raise the ransom.
