The story is set in the mid-19th century American West, depicting the year 1863, when a wagon train of the westward expansion in the United States is struggling. Martha's family is so poor that they only have a few necessities on their wagon. From a young age, Martha has been interested in riding, driving, and adventure. She feels out of place with the other girls and is mocked by boys for practicing physical work. After Martha's father is severely injured while training horses, she must take on the responsibility of driving their family wagon and caring for the horses. After being bullied for fighting with boys, Martha cuts her hair short and wears pants, determined to compete with them. However, when the wagon train is robbed, everyone angrily blames this rebellious girl for bringing the thieves and disaster. Martha deduces that the thieves won't go far, and to clear up the misunderstanding, she sets off on horseback alone, disguised as a boy, embarking on an adventurous journey. Meanwhile, the pioneers’ wagon train is about to cross the most dangerous wilderness, an area from which no one has ever returned alive, and they urgently need a guide familiar with the terrain.
