The circus director, Armando (played by Ricardo Montalban), adopts and protects a lonely gorilla, naming him Caesar (played by Roddy McDowall). Under Armando's meticulous care, Caesar gradually grows up, and he develops a very close relationship with his "father," Armando. A virus wipes out cats and dogs on Earth, and humans, who have lost their most loyal companions, turn their attention to gorillas, who are very similar to them. This leads to the trend of keeping gorillas as pets. However, humanity's brutal nature makes life unbearable for these originally gentle gorillas, as they are tortured and abused, forever losing their freedom. Eventually, the gorillas decide they can no longer tolerate this, and under Caesar's leadership, they boldly rise up, vowing to overthrow human oppression and domination.
