Mitch (played by Billy Crystal) works in the advertising department of a radio station. Until he turns thirty-nine, Mitch believes he has a perfect and happy life. However, after that, he starts to go downhill. Not only is his career at a standstill, but he also begins to feel insecure internally, as desolate as a desert. Phil (played by Daniel Stern) is Mitch's best friend, living under the oppression of his strong-willed wife and father-in-law, which leads to his introverted and repressed personality. One day, a young girl suddenly appears beside Phil, claiming she is pregnant with his child. Ed (played by Bruno Kirby) is in middle age, but the traumas of his childhood have made him lose trust in relationships; he still flits from flower to flower, unwilling to settle down. These three men embark on an absurd journey of pleasure-seeking to celebrate Mitch's thirty-ninth birthday.
