The film is adapted from the famous novel of the same name by renowned writer Stefan Zweig and produced by Universal Pictures. In 1885, 14-year-old Lisa (Joan Fontaine) has a crush on her neighbor, the pianist Stefan (Louis Jourdan). When she grows into a beautiful woman, she returns to seek him out and engages in a relationship with him. The pianist soon forgets Lisa just like he does with other women. The pianist treats her as a passing fancy and quickly forgets her. Eventually, their son dies of typhoid, and exhausted from heartache, Lisa writes a long letter to the pianist, expressing her love that has never wavered over the past 15 years. After Lisa’s death, her grieving husband challenges the pianist to a duel. Upon reading Lisa’s deeply touching letter, he who had initially planned to escape, boards the carriage heading to the duel...
