On the recommendation of Professor Alan Driscoll (played by Christopher Lee), a young female student, Nan Barlow (played by Venetia Stevenson), travels to the fictional town of Whitewood in Massachusetts to study witchcraft. She discovers that the town is cursed by the reincarnation of a notorious witch, Elizabeth Selwyn/Mrs. Newlis (played by Patricia Jessel), who was burned at the stake in the 17th century. To maintain her immortality, a virgin must be sacrificed to the witch every year—this year, the student is the chosen victim.
