The story takes place during World War II. To escape the turmoil of war, Saburo Shobukawa (played by Kazunari Ogata) ventures to China, where he makes a living playing the trombone in a nightclub. Long-standing loneliness and repression have twisted Saburo's character, causing him to become taciturn. After the war, Saburo returns to his hometown and starts a family. The pregnancy of his wife brings Saburo a long-overdue joy, but little does he expect that the birth of his son Tony (played by Hidetoshi Nishijima) will be accompanied by his wife's death. As time passes, Tony grows up, becoming accustomed to his gloomy and indifferent father, as well as his lonely and unsupported childhood. Later, Tony is admitted to an art university, where he starts to invest his energy and time into artistic creation. With considerable talent in the arts, Tony quickly achieves significant success, changing the trajectory of his life.
