The story takes place in an embassy, where in the eyes of young boy Philip (played by Bobby Henrey), the butler Baines (played by Ralph Richardson) is an undeniable hero. The reason behind this stems from Philip's frequently absent parents, and with them away, the responsibility of caring for and watching over Philip naturally falls to Baines. At Philip's sensitive and innocent age, someone who takes care of everything for him is equivalent to an all-powerful hero. But is Baines really as upright and brave as Philip believes? Of course not; he is just an ordinary adult. Despite having a family, Baines maintains an ambiguous relationship with a young woman named Julie (played by Michèle Morgan), even secretly bringing her to the embassy for rendezvous while Philip's parents are away. Unexpectedly, an incident takes Mrs. Baines's life, and what appears to be a simple accident to Philip seems to him a murder long in the making.
